The challenges of dyslexia screening & digital solutions

This animation communicates the challenges of current dyslexia screening techniques accompanied with statistics and visualisations, and then illustrates ‘DIMMAND’, a digital solution for a digital health, dyslexia detection tool.

We worked together to deliver a web based solution, digital health education accessibility tool and animation to launch their business with. We designed a visual identity with a digital health feel to pitch their project, and a creative design concept to appeal to young children who are the target users of the app.

The 60 second video can be shown at presentations, on the clients website, and sent via email to explain the project and engage the viewer in a creative and effective way. At the time of the production of the animation, the client was pitching for more funding, so it had to be an important tool to engage potential funders.

The challenge

The main challenges we faced with the project was to create two brands; a brand for the app narrative and interface that would engage younger children while being the basis of a screening test that gives viable indicative results, and a brand for the professional side of the business to communicate the impact of the product and pitch for investment.

For the digital project aimed at  4 - 8 year olds, we created three initial creative directions that would engage the audience to partake in the screening tests. We produced three visual directions for the gamified screening test concept. We used a story book theme with the title ‘A word with the whale’ to direct the narrative and interface. We produced three illustrated directions which were accessible, engaging and exciting for the target audience. We used dyslexia friendly typefaces, large text and accessible high contrast colour pallets to make the app accessible to a young audience who potentially had dyslexia.

The impact

The DIMMAND app has the potential to provide significant positive health care and economic impact. It is expected to reduce intervention costs, improve dyslexia detection at an early age and aid self-management once completed.

Although dyslexia cannot be cured, there is a consensus that interventions are more effective and have greater impact the earlier they are administered. Effective interventions start with diagnosis. Currently, formal diagnosis requires an assessment by a dyslexia specialist or educational psychologist. These assessments are expensive and are not easy for a non-specialist teacher or parent to interpret. Consequently, formal assessments are normally performed

at a much later age, when interventions are less likely to be effective. My design work helped produce the user interface, explanatory animation, professional presentation and website, assessment forms and design tools to help this early intervention become a reality.
